Barbara L. Desrosiers

Making visible the invisible influences upon us, finding a valid connection between the earthly and the spiritual, these are the essence of my calling as an artist. I create in an effort to understand God’s presence and nature in this world. The drive to make art leads me to design pieces which are exploratory in nature: what is my relationship to creation, what is my relationship to God, what is his relationship to creation? I aim to create art which opens the door to the heart and offers visual assistance in the meditative, spiritual journey of humanity.

My work has progressed through several stages, from the painted surface, to a mixed media surface with polymer clay and acrylic, to my current passion, the digital montage. My work has always been influenced and informed by my photography which functions as the underpinning of all my growth as an artist. As with life, in my art I see no outlines and no barriers. All is connected. I try to allow myself permission to experiment with whatever technique an idea demands of me, while always trying to remain faithful to the voice deep within.

I find hope in the words of Robert Creeley, poet, when he said “ . . . art is a gate, not a product. . .” Art is the doorway through which I can connect with the other side.
